Late Christmas, Oscar Wilde and Flowers

So I know I'm 32 days late, but I guess there was more sewing involved than I had anticipated.

But my cross stitch is now COMPLETE! :D

On another note, I have just finished reading 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' by Oscar Wilde, and it was very interesting. I wouldn't go so far as to say it was amazing. I could understand why it had become a classic, and it had some very interesting ideas about society, but beyond that the plot was a bit thin. I had to read it for research in my gothic story English majorwork.

I have been experimenting with different methods of making fabric flowers. Well, I've only made one so far. I think it's pretty cool, but it's not what I'm looking for. This looks more like a rose, whereas I am looking for a more traditional petal shape.

New Year

To be honest, one year seems to just roll onto another without too much differenciation.

Looking back on 2011, I decided that my resolutions for 2012 would be to meet new people and strengthen the relationships I already have.

Then of course I was reminded, this is my HSC year.... NOT LIKELY!

Anyway, my Christmas cross stitch for my parents that I have been working on since easter last year... Sadly, it was not complete by Christmas T-T

(P.S these photos were taken one week apart - shows how much work can be achieved with a deadline!)

I am very nearly finished, and like all projects I work on, I think it is very ugly! It is way oversized, who wants that thing framed on their wall?! I'll just be glad when it's completed :)

I have decided the gold/green fabric was hideous, and have now re-ordered my colours. The plain silk 7 colour is a dark red woven with black and will be used for the decorated sash. The lighter red (the colours in this picture are a bit off), plain silk 4, shall be used for the bodice. The red/white striped material is a krama scarf I bought in Cambodia last year which shall be incorperated somehow into the design. The black is for the skirt.

Beginning my Project

I have imported silk through Tabitha, a fantastic organisation that raises money for poor families in Cambodia.

So I got my silk last week.

And there's an issue....

My lovely gold colour...... Well, the weft thread is gold. The warp thread is GREEN!!!!!

What am I to do now? Does the green look hideous? The only issue is that it's not a simple process to go back and re-select the colour. What do I do? Is this alright? It only appears green in some lights, as you can see above. Uuuuhhhh -_-

Tea and Cambodia ideas

So I created this mini table runner thing for my parents' cups of tea that mum frets will ruin her nice table. It was a birthday present for my mum :)
(If you look at my previous post about my cushion, you may spot some similarities in fabric ;))

So I went to Cambodia earlier this year, and really liked this image of a traditional wedding outfit (Right hand side)

Face Shading

So, I've decided I'm going to further my experience in realistic shading-type drawings, particularly faces. And I LOVE IT!!!

This first one was taken from a random black and white picture I found of a woman online, claiming she was Joan of Arc or something, but the face and the shadows struck me and I decided to draw it.

And then, of course, David Bowie :D He never loses his charm.

This was my first attempt at trying to draw blonde hair in contast to a dark background, and it didn't work out completely, but it's pretty alright for a first attempt :)

My dad picked out it was David Bowie the moment he saw this, and mum is still asking who on earth David Bowie is. Even I know who he is, and I wasnt a 60s kid like her!!

Getting excited to just sit back and sew and draw all holidays :) Spent today sewing a table runner for my mum's birthday, I really hope she doesn't read this blog and ruin the surprise!!

It's more than a square!

It's a SQUARE CUSHION!

I apologise that this is not straight, but my blogging thing just got updated and I can't work out how to turn pictures around....

Unfortunately when it's on the pillow you lose all the exciting bits around the edge D;

And this is the back!

I'm so proud that this is done - there was a point there where I wondered if it would ever actually look like a cushion, but it surpassed my expectations!

I must just be awesome :D

I am currently at a half-way point in two squares for my large embroidered cushion for school textiles.

I struck difficulty with the rosella one, I need to find some kind of eye-looking button or something to sew on for an eye, and I'm having a bit of a block about the blue thread which does not really show up, at all. I'm considering going over it in white thread?

I moved on to the bottle-brush in the meantime, and I quite like the overall effect. This is a terrible photo though, I hope the leaves don't look that bad in real life... Dang it, I knew I should have made them equal!!

I realised with horror today that my mum will be away during the time leading up to my handing in of this task, so I'm either going to prove my genius by whipping up some original construction stuff about making it actually into a pillow, or else I'm going to suffer with this assignment.

On the note of failing in textiles, we have an assessment next week on the properties of fibres and fabrics. I am SO dead. I very rarely come up to an assessment feeling completely and utterly unprepared. In fact, I don't think I've ever felt that before...

So I'm either going to have some brainwave about it in the next week, or I'm doomed for that too!

Leaf Stitching

That's right! Two posts in two days!! So today I started and completed a second square, or rather rectangle, and decided to share it with you.

So this one is my subtle 'square,' so I used muted tones. This picture doesn't pick up the colouring as well as it does in real life... sadface.

Since I do textiles now, and I learn awesome technical stuff, I can say that the yellow/green thread appears brighter than the others, as it is made out of nylon, with has shiny properties, as apposed to rayon thread. Or maybe it was the other way around... o_o

CLOSE UPS!

I must admit that I really don't like this square. I was so excited about doing this, especially with the freehand machine stitching....... but I rushed it so much, cause I was feeling frustrated as the backing fabric that I was using kept doing weird stuff... ah well, perseverence!!

New Sewing Machine!

So I totally got a new sewing machine! I forgot to take a photo, and so couldn't be bothered getting one now for this blog, cause I'm THAT LAZY.

Anywho, it's a massive upgrade from our old dinosaur one. I have now learned to do freehand embroidery, which is what I've always wanted to learn! Here's a sample of what it can do (although it wasnt me who made this particular sample - although I'm the one who vainly tried to write 'hello'!)

So I'm currently working on a new textiles majorwork, and I'm working on different squares for an embroidered cushion inspired by the scenery of the blue mountains. Here's my first square that I've completed, which hopefully resembles wattle!

I've also been learning how to applique, which is how the stem of the plant was made. Applique is the technique of gluing fabrics on top of each other.

My next square is an experiement with freehand stitching on a pattern of leaves! I'm very excited to get started.

Howl Cosplay

So the other day I attended Supanova for the first time ever! It was amazing! Supanova is a festival of nerds like me who like to dress up as characters from Pop Culture. I think that's what the criteria is anyway...

So I decided I would go as Howl from Howl's Moving Castle, if my friend would go as Sophie! I picked up this white jacket as my base for my costume:

From there I spent many MANY hours ripping, sewing, and painting!!

Guess who made a skirt?!

Took me so long... my Textiles teacher says she had a quick glance over it before she marked it, and said, "Your hem is done to perfection!" which from her is pretty high praise. That was before I realised that she only noted the hem...

So happy I have made something so sophisticated on a sewing machine all by myself :D Has a hook and eye and a zipper (the button is pointless other than aesthetic appeal)

Totoro Cross Stitch and Zippers

That's right, I made a Totoro cross-stitch!!!!

I've been working on this one for 4 months. Doesn't sound like a very long time... but in this month alone I would have spent at least 15 hours on this stupid bit of stitching. Why do cross stitches take so long? Why?

And that line half way through his belly is REALLY frustrating... I ran out of that coloured thread ;( I'm too lazy to re-do the whole thing however. I shall never be able to look at it without cringing. Good thing I'm giving it to my dad!

Meanwhile, in my textiles class, I sewed a zipper!!!!! I'm feeling very pro.

Drawing and Cinderella

A few days ago, my Textiles class got a special visit from the Whitehouse Institute of Design, who spent a whole day working with us on improving our drawing skills in fashion.

This was my best drawing from the day, still not brilliant, but pretty good I think :) It was based on a photograph:

Anyway, on another note, yesterday I went to a Disney Party :D

I went as Cinderella. My costume was sourced from various opp shops, and my mum sewed the apron for me :)

Uncreative

Ahh, yeah 11 is so incredibly consuming... And I'm away on a camp all weekend, and excuses excuses, I never have any time to be creative... ever...

I am, however, getting a lot of work done.

But as the art class at school went on an epic excursion today, and I was left behind in my Ancient History class, I felt a lot like the people in that comic.

I have ALWAYS counted myself as an Art student. And now I am constantly whining that I did not choose it for senior years, as my friends and family are well aware of (Sorry guys...)

So I'm thinking I might make up for it by painting a giant canvas for an Extension English visual represenation project. Just as long as it still counts as English, and isn't obviously a vain attempt at pretending that I still count as part of the art class........

Textiles

So I've just started the HSC Textiles course, and am finding it very challenging. My teacher has very high expectations, and I find myself turning up 10 minutes early to every class just to avoid the chance of being late and getting a demerit! I feel like such a nerd.

Anyway, we've started work on seams. We've been doing some sample work, and I thought I'd put some pictures up.

Pardon the terrible quality photos, but I couldn't find my camera and had to resort to my computer webcam.

These are my bound seams - very tricky. I was the first person in the class (but certainly not the last) to get a cotton lock over doing this fiddly work. That means that the fabric gets stuck in the bobbin thing and you pretty much have to take apart the whole machine and rip out your fabric. Thanks for using me as a demonstraction, that really made my day (not). At least I learned to be more careful!

These were my first attempts at using an overlocker - what a marvellous invention!! A few seconds of loud noises, and the machine creates a complex stitch and cuts the fabric for you, and it always looks professional.

On this page I sewed some very simple hems, and the bottom three were hand-stitched. Oh yes, I am amazing at handstitching after those hundreds of hours I've spent on cross-stitches!!! It was supposed to take the whole lesson, and I finished in the first 20 minutes :D Browny points for me.

As a reward for fininishing the handstitching so quickly, my teacher showed me this very unusual seam. Hand-stitched again, but I'm not sure if I did it quite right... I think this is called scalloped or something? It's supposed to be a decorative hem for sleeves or something.

So yeah, Textiles is turning out as more challenging than I thought, but lots of fun! Haven't had to do any figure drawings yet though ;)

Drawing, drawing, drawing...

As I am about to begin a textiles class at school, I thought I should put some work into getting better at fashion drawings.

Not that I'm saying any are particularly fashionable.

I was helped along the way though, so you might be able to see the way my original fairly-preportionate manga-ish drawings turn into more stylised, yet realistic drawings.

Harry Potter Dobby socks

After much trial and error, I completed my Christmas Harry Potter socks at 10pm on Christmas night!!!

At least I had two hours to wear them on the right occasion :D

They were my first attempt at making socks!

Manga Studios

So I got this manga studios present for my birthday... and have only JUST gotten round to using it :P I wanted to trial it, and so picked that random picture which I posted previously of my formal dress, and started fiddling with this program. This drawing took me 2 hours :S it's a bit more complicated than I thought... and I haven't worked out how to do the tails on speech bubbles yet!!!

So yeah, here's my random digital art test:

p.s the face and hair are totally off, but i made them just random. i was mainly focusing on the outfit. How cool is the flower pattern on the dress?? So cool when i found that template :D

Formal and Dobby Socks

Well I had my year 10 formal last week! In the excitement of the week leading up to it, and during a very boring art lesson, I drew an A3 version of my dress:

It's not great, but it's my first sketch in what feels like forever! My 2008 drawing phase which essentially started this blog has seriously died down...

Anywho, this is me and some other friends at the formal - see if you can pick my dress!!

Meanwhile, in getting in the mood for Christmas (and the release of the latest Harry Potter movie) I have been knitting some Dobby christmas socks! For all you non-fans out there, Dobby the house-elf knits Harry some socks for Christmas in book 4, a red one with broomsticks, and a green one with snitches. I am very excited about finishing these socks and wearing them for Christmas - even if it is a bit too hot for them!!

Living Through World War II

'Living Through World War II' - my PIP (personal interest pathway) project for 2010 at my school. I interviewed three lovely ladies from my church who grew up together through the war, and on the side I knitted some Wristlets:

My 10-minute presentation was probably the longest I've stood up and spoken in front of a crowd - a bit daunting, but totally worth it!! In my stall I had world war two music, lollies, books, and even a dress from my sister's WWII musical a few years back...

Shall now work on completing the second mitten - I never thought I'd actually want to wear them, but they're the best bit of knitting I've ever done :) After that, I might be knitting some socks for the first time :D gotta learn how to turn a heal...

Knitting project and Formal dresses

Lately I've actually been doing some creative stuff... but unfortunately I am finding it very boring.

I am researching women during world war 2 who knitted for their soldier friends, and got stuck half way through a tricky glove pattern on double-pointed needles:
I am now working on some 'wristlets,' the authentity of which I am beginning to doubt with its simple and drastically boring pattern. at the moment it is a block of ribbed knitting... or whatever you call it.

Meanwhile, I went shopping for my school formal dress!! I found a fantastic vintage dress and got it at a very cheap price too! However I have been convinced out of wearing it for its classic look, and am now searching for a more fun modern dress. Better get a move on before all the good ones are gone!!! However this is my exam week, so I may have to wait a while...

Europe

Wow!!! I have just spent a wonderful holidays touring Italy, France and England with my school.

My trip to the Palace of Versaille in France was perhaps ruined a little by an exhibition by the Japanese artist Takashi Murakami who decided to put his models in an out-of-place environment - an interesting idea that would normally interest me, but when you're trying to get photos of fabulous ancient rooms, it's just downright annoying.

An interesting story to tell however, and worth putting on this blog about creativity, especially since Japanese art is an area of interest for me.

I saw some pretty spectacular colours. Here's some artwork I saw in the Vatican in Italy that amazed me with its vibrancy:

Sewing Bag

As I put my sewing stuff away from my angel cross stitch (see previous post), I was complaining how annoying my organisation of all my stuff was. So then I thought - I should make something large which can hold all the stuff which is in small containers everywhere!

So I pulled out my Jane Austen sewing book, took a glance at some 'huswife' (weird bag things) images, and then drew up a design and made this:

(It's not that wonky looking in real life!)

I must say that I surprised even myself with how smoothly everything worked out! I pretty much designed the whole thing myself, and I definately hand-sewed the entire thing by myself. There is a layer of lining which cannot be seen, to pad it out a bit, and a different colour on the outside - so in the bits with the pockets, there's four layers of fabric going.

This is it all folded up :D

I must admit I stole the scissors tie thing off the Jane Austen sewing book. That wasn't my idea. But I didnt follow the instructions at all - only the picture! I hate following instructions. And it's so much more satisfying knowing you designed it yourself - that's why I hand-sew everything, far more satisfaction!

Completion

Few!!! This one's been going all year!! I'm not quite sure when I did actually start it, but I finished it only a few minutes ago!! My lovely angel.

So yeah, it's nice to finish something as I have not been doing much creative stuff lately. Although I cannot look at this cross-stitch without seeing the horrible pencil lines, and the scrappy outlining, and the weird dark pink on the dress etc etc, I do quite like it :)

I feel SO uncreative these days. I am disgraced that I have a blog all about being creative when I feel incredibly uncreative.

I haven't drawn, written, sewen or down anything interesting in a very long time.

I am still half-way through that doll.

I am still half-way through some yarn bombing.

I am still half-way through that cross stitch.

But I am completely unmotivated to do any of that stuff... Perhaps I shall have more time in the holidays coming up.

Although, I did wear those long gloves to a school mufty day yesterday. I felt very pleased with my once-creative skills :)

Some of you may remember my bit of yarn bombing that I did a few months back...... well, when i just put it up and it was still looking great, it looked like this:

However, now the colours have almost completely bleeched out, and I would've gotten a picture, but it's raining (yay for rain!!)

So anyway, my mum asked me the dreaded question - "Do you think it's time to take it down? It's supposed to be adding to the environment after all, not detracting from it."

JEEZ, thanks!! But I get her point. It looks disgraceful now, and it does seem like a pathetic attempt. However, it was my first go, and I had never ever considered that it might be me that cuts it off eventually... it would be very sad :(

Meanwhile, I've started a new bit of yarn bombing... not so interesting this time, just two colours in a patter, but I might add some writing afterwards :)

GLOVES!!

At last I have created myself a pair of long gloves!! Sadly, they do not have the triforce imprinted on them so I could look like Princess Zelda, but maybe next time!

I did make two, but one hand was busy taking the photo, so you can only see one in the picture :3 The pattern was based on one by http://sweaterscapes.com/glove-pattern.htm but I altered it to make fingerless gloves.

They came out far too tight though - I guessed the amount of stitches because I was using different needle sizes to those suggested. They still fit, but are a little tricky getting on and off!!

This was my first project using double-pointed needles (see my last post) so that was a challenge! I feel quite confident using them now, after making such long gloves!! Can't wait to wear them tonight when I meet up with my family :)

Gloves and WWII

I've been knitting long gloves recently, I've nearly finished one of them but here's a photo of when I started it - my first proper time of using double-pointed needles, it was sooo confusing at first!!!

But I got the hang of it - the only problem was when I wanted to switch back to normal needles and it wasn't as easy as I thought it would :S I wish I could just follow the pattern... but I can't help twigging it for my own flair, and it causes annoying problems!! For instance, the gloves are surprisingly tight, but that might've been because I ate so much over the weekend...

Yeah, so this weekend I went away to Kyck, a Katoomba youth convention where we learned about the book of Ecclesiasties and how meaningless life can be without Jesus. Fun weekend :) Bring on Kyck 2011!!

Anyway, I'm doing a personal interest project at school, and I've decided to research women's roles in WWII, and I shall be interviewing some of the older women in our church and collaborating their stuff into a book! So if anyone has any resources, such as women's weeklys from the wartime, or any wartime knitting pattersn, please let me know!! If it all works out how I want it to, I might include some war-time projects in the collaboration and even put it into a book to give/sell (havent decided yet ;)) for our church's anniversary later this year.

Back from a great holiday, with a strange feeling that I've delved further into my family's past than ever before...

Haven't progressed at all with my doll :( I'm in still confusion of how to do the face...

I spent most of my creative hours away continuing in this angel cross stitch which I've been working on for quite a few months... check it out so far.

I feel in a very strange mood to play computer games again... perhaps I took my dad's comment that I used to be more adventurous than I am now too seriously, and am now returning to old habits ... hmmm.

I love how long cross stitches take! I can rarely take much pleasure in a project that's completed quickly. If you're wondering why there's a gap in sections of this one, particularly at the base of the underskirt, there's going to be a sort of wreath put in... I'm just finishing the wings first.

So - I've been continuing my doll. I thought the sleeves were horrible, but people tell me it's okay, and it's beginning to grow on me... I'm at a loss of how to do the face... and I haven't even begun to worry about the hair!! I sewed the belt soooo neatly on the back, then I rushed the front, and it's all wobbly stitching :( I wanted to properly hem the sleeves and neckline, but it was getting super tricky with the small stitches, so it ended up becoming a feature. If you click on the picture to get a bigger version you'll probably be able to see the stitches more clearly. I tried looking for blue thread for ages, but I couldn't find any so in the end I just used white. I think it worked well...

Anyway, I've been working on another surprise present for my sister's birthday, but I can't show it just yet in case she reads this before her birthday... but what do people think of this wool? I think it's quite nice.

Meanwhile, I've come back to my Aaron Finder (still need a new last name >.<) book which I started last holidays - I didn't get any time during term to write it! On reflection, the story seemed a little dull, but then I started writing some more and got fully back into it! I want to get this finished by the end of the year and sent to a publisher, hopefully. I know I've said this before, but I'd really like to do it before I leave school, I know I'll probably be rejected, but I want the satisfaction that I sent a book!!

Well, I have been working on making a doll - and it was going SO well until I realised the arms were too skinny, so at the last minute I changed my pattern for how I was making them and... well... it's not very well preportioned anymore >.<

It's kind of embarassing :( I was doing so well!!!! they're too long or something... just not shaped enough to look right compared to the rest of the body.
And since taking this photo I've started on the top half of a dress, and it's a MESS!!! I'll post photos when it's done... :(

It was a lot of fun making though!! I absolutely love hand-sewing stuff, I don't know why...

Anyway, I need suggestions - how should I do the face?? Detailed? Plain? Sewn? Drawn? I have no idea so far!! And I don't really know how I'm going to do the hair either... I'll finish the dress first.

I went away from the computer after my last post enthusiastically, and got out pen and paper and started drawing up a plan of a rag-doll. I hadn't even finished the first drawing before i knew it wasn't working.

Please, I need help!! Does anyone know how to make a rag-doll?? I can't find any good instructions online. When I say 'rag' doll i dont mean something scrappy, just a hand-sewn doll with detatchable clothes (possibly - or I could just make a new doll for each outfit ...)

Anyway, even a suggestion would be nice! My main dilemmas are how to make it so the arms and legs could bend, how to make feet that aren't just blobs (cause i'd wanna make shoes too) and yeah...

Also, do you think I should make it shape-y with a proper waist and everything, or just make it quite straight??

Please give ideas!!!

Homework and Rag Dolls

I have felt my creative flair rather flattened lately by suddenly having a wave of homework and assignments. I always thought that spending hours doing schoolwork was a discision you had to make at some point in high school, but I have just woken up one day and realised that I'm putting in two or more hours of work most nights...

And the funny thing is, I love it!! I simply hate the feeling of being bored so much that feeling busy is bliss compared to it! Yay!

I had to perform a piano piece for class today. It went better than I thought it would, but I still stumbled over a section and missed the second last note. Haha... it was all good fun though!

I really want to make something right now, and seeing a sort of rag-doll that my friend had created inspired me to make one too! Although i have very limited fabrics... I had thought I should make various costumes and stuff, but I'd be lucky to find fabric enough to make the doll and perhaps two outfits. And last time I attempted making a doll of that sort... well, let's just say that fraying is just about my most hated aspect of sewing.

I haven't really had much time to visit my geurilla knitting... it would be nice if my dad stopped spilling the beans about who's been putting all the knitting up to our neighbours though. It's supposed to be annonomus!!! The day my parents realised it was me putting it up (the first day I tried), I knew I'd only ever recieve about a third of the pertential thrill in doing it.

I appologise for all the appaling spelling mistakes in this post, but I have been exposed as this doesn't seem to put red squiggly lines under spelling errors anymore... :( alas, my spelling est very poor.

Knitting

Well, I'm not a state winner for the Novella Competition, but I still stand a chance of being a shortlisted or "highly recommended" participant. Doesn't it defeat the purpose if they choose who was shortlisted AFTER choosing the state winners though? Strange...

Anyway, today I took a walk with a had and dark sunglasses and stood next to a particular pole, and waiting around suspiciously for everyone in sight to disappear. Who would guess that a Sunday morning would have so many people taking a walk?? After about five minutes waiting, I gave up and took out my 2m long piece of knitting and started sewing it up with trembling hands. After a few stitches however, I started to quite enjoy myself. I loved it every time someone walked past, probably giving me shifty looks and wondering what on earth I was doing, but were too scared to ask. I just kept sewing away, ignoring everyone. One nice man asked me what I was doing, but before I could actually work out what I really was doing (i still have no idea) he suggested it was art, and I agreed. He told me all about his wife and how she likes quilting and thought my little piece was quite nice and bright, and then he went on. As he walked away, I thought about how I would never EVER have such a nice conversation like that with a stranger, and decided I want to try and do more of this geurilla knitting in the future as I enjoyed the whole thing so much.

Doesn't look 2 metres, does it?? Well, I think it was a bit short of it because I was beginning to worry how long I would have to stand there sewing it up... I think in the end it took nearly half an hour, but I loved every minute of it.

I was very impressed with how this bit turned out. "Llama was here" I did that whole little bit in just over half an hour. I drew out the words lightly with pencil, then stitched over them, and then folded back the edges and sewed it onto the knitting. Now everyone can know that Llama who made the first piece made the second one too :)

Anyway, I have been back at school for nearly a complete fortnight, and have not written a single word of my story I started in the holidays :( and I was quite bored last night, I guess I didn't think of writing it...

But I had to write a short story for English. That was fun. I killed off the main character, then realised that I was about 400 words over the 500 word limit, so I had to cut that bit out ~ haha. Ah well. I've never had such an editing-out task before... Very hard to choose what has to go.

Also, drawing-wise, we've finally been doing pencil drawings in art class, so I can finally actually feel good at art :D I need to find darker pencils... anyone know what that spray stuff is called for drawings so they don't smudge??

Aaron Finder

Recently, my head has been filled with the character Aaron Finder. I have heard it said before that an author lives through their character and can feel their emotions, and I have proved it to myself yet again by creating this character. Whenever I conjure up emotions to write about them, I find I am suddenly feeling the emotions in a very real way and am left angry for no apparent reason except that Aaron is in my story, or lonely because Aaron is.

I still hate the last name Finder, but I simply adore the character. I said in my last blog entry that I had no inspiration. But, I have started a children's series of somewhat-fantasy, starring Aaron Finder who is trying to find his Dad (hense why I don't like the name Finder - cause he is a finder, in a sense :S it's a bit lame... and unintentional)

Anyway, I have been fully immersed in the story in a way that I haven't been for a very long time. Plus, if I have been successfully chosen to be a state winner in the Somorset Competition, I shall be hearing so in the next week - but if I was a successfully short-listed or didn't do well at all, I shall be hearing the week after. Fingers crossed!!! Once I hear how I have done in this competition, I shall finally take action towards sending this new book to a publisher (after finishing and editing etc of course)

Meanwhile, my site elizabethdanara.mysite.com is having a bit of a re-vamp. I designed advertisements for it about a whole year ago, and have decided to finally start advertising it.

I shall write again soon after I hear news on the competition...

Failing........

Right now, all my writing attempts are trashy.

So I thought, why don't I go back to drawing, which I used to do all the time but haven't done for like a whole year?

Well, I tried that out too, but my drawing style seems to have failed too... unless I have such little confidence that when I started drawing a head and neck, I despaired and scrunched it up and pronounced myself an incapable drawer.

I HAVE NO INSPIRATION!!!!!!!!!!!

One has to wonder if this is due to the fact that I haven't watched any movies (or at least what I would justify as a real movie) in the last few months. Usually it's in the middle of a good movie that I get my inspiration for a story or a picture...

Anyway, I've decided that I want to go back to traditional fantasy, which I have been too scared to write for a long time now as I often get (perhaps by invisible people in my mind) criticised for it, and so I try to write realism and it fails miserably.

I had thought this long 2-month holiday would give me heaps of time to write a lot. Well, it's coming to an end and all I've written was a couple of pages that really weren't working. Perhaps returning to my busy school life will give me more to do and think about?

Hmmm............

How can I write fantasy that is not cliché? Is it possible? And could I write fantasy that doesn't have magic, or at least the main characters dont have it?? cause im sick of magic

Scrapped and Started

The story I started recently was going quite well - although I felt a strange conviction that what I was writing was a bad idea, and so I am sorry to say I have scrapped that idea. I always keep my attempts at writing, and I now read over what I wrote fondly, but refuse to continue.

Meanwhile, I have been musing over the subjects of abortion and what happens to babies that die and where life really begins and all that. I have had the inspiration to write about someone who knows their unborn baby cannot survive, and the process they go through of deciding what to do and how to react. A more morbid storyline than what I usually write about, and I have no idea if it will work at all. Generally I can tell if a story is going to work by the time I have written only a page or two of it, and seeing if the characters are easily usable, so I shall see if this works.

Generally when I start a story I begin by mapping out the characters. I flip through baby-name books to get some ideas, and then draw rough pictures of the main characters and write up some notes on them. Then I might right down a few ideas for where the story is going to go, and then I get started pretty quickly on the first part of the story to see if it'll work.

What attracts me to this new story is that for the first time - ever, I think - I have come up with a storyline that is not based on any other book or movie!!! And I really have no idea what is gonna happen in it...

Life is pretty slow at the moment. A lot of reading, as I am trying to finish my 1000 page Obernewtyn #5 book I've been reading for a year and a bit. After five books in a series of torment, it's finally getting interesting! I knew 21 years of writing would eventually pay off for the writer.

New Writing

I has this idea for a novel for a long time, but I thought it sounded too intimidating to write. Plus I can't write romance to save myself, which would be a main feature of the story. I thought I was terrible at writing non-fantasy, but in the end it was my competition story which made me decide to write it. Half of that story was non-fantasy, and I think it worked quite well, so I'm giving this one a go.

And I seriously need to try and force myself to write in discription :( i just wanna let the reader imagine it themselves, but it means the setting is almost non-existent!

Meanwhile, inspired by one of my sister's books on yarn bombing, I decided to give it a shot myself. I went for a walk around the block, and found a nice chair that no-one ever sits on, and making sure no-one was looking, I quickly measured it. I then went home, and in a few hours I had created some knitting to my own made-up pattern. The name reads "Llama" and a smiley face, and I realised through this that I need to develop my sewing letters skills more as both my parents walked past it, stopped and said, "this looks suspiciously like something she would make....." but couldn't read the letters.

Also, I didn't measure it well enough as I was try to get away as quickly as possible, and so it was far too bit and the seam bulges out quite a lot.

Competition

Hey, I haven't been on my blog for a while now. I have just entered "The Woven Story" which I completed earlier this year in the Somerset National Novella Writing Competition.

I am aiming to get at least shortlisted. About 3 people from NSW/ACT will be shortlisted, and the state winner from there will be up against the other state winners from Australia. I imagine I am up against some heavy competition, but I believe I have a fair chance of being shortlisted as only about 80 people compete, my friend tells me. But she might not be right... not sure.

Anyway, it would be so very awesome and life-changing if I actually won this........ ahem.

I started this story about a month ago that i thought would be a brilliant idea, but now im already sick of it after one chapter, but I hate ditching stories. I hate it. I have another idea for a story, which is awesome in my head, but the more awesome these things are in my head, the worse they are on paper. So i don't know if i wanna write it... anyway, I've been feeling a little agitated recently that I haven't had enough experience to really be writing stories at all. What I am basing almost all my material on is other books and movies, which is very unreliable for real life.

That's my main strong point in my Novella in the competition, I think though. It's one of the first things I have written about with more content based on what I have experienced, than fantasy stuff ripped off from other works. There is some fantasy at the end, but a lot of it sounds just like what I am like, which can be a little embarassing when people read my stuff, cause it's like this large insite into my brain. I never really thought about how much a book is the author's inner thoughts until I have been writing for myself now...

Completed Story

Just now I have completed another of my stories. It was one I feared might be neglected, but recently I've been working on it heaps, and I just wrote a bit more and I was like "that's enough for today" and then I was like "oh... did I just finish that?!??" and i had!! I hadn't really thought about it, but that's the 6th book I have now completed!

... Yay!!!!!

In the end though, like so many of my other ones, my views changed as I wrote it. At first I thought this would be a great one to show my friends, but by the end I think I used the words "soul" and "magic" far too much for my liking.

That's a terrible thing that's happened to my writing in the last year or so. I have made a dramatic turn from including overfilling details of magic-casters, to now writing warning to readers never to ever even consider such things. I can now hardly face up to having written my Doria triligy, cause I used the word "spirit" so much in it. I just worry how some people might take it...

So anyway, I've thought recently that I might take another shot at trying to find a publishing company that might consider my stuff. Dunno whether I'd send this one (I'm quite fond of this one actually! Despite the "soul" characters written about all the time) or my Doria triligy... hmm....

Swan Lake and Woven Story

A company has come to Australia and is performing the ballet Swan Lake only three times - costs way too much, but wouldn't that just be awesome too see! *sigh*...

A great anime series, Princess Tutu, is based on Swan Lake. I never realised till I was watching it for the second time and I realised the characters and themes and songs were straight from this ballet. I did ballet when I was 5, and only wish I had continued...

Anyway, yesterday I thought back to those crazy three months last year when I sat down and wrote my whole Tales of Doria trilogy. I remembered it was a time when I had a laptop alone in my room, and there was no internet connection. So, trying to copy these methods, I got my dad's laptop and plugged it in my room, and then found myself typing for about 6 hours!! All in all, I typed over 9000 words yesterday in a story I started a while ago called the Woven Story, and wrote about 3 times as much as I had already done.

I am happy I have finally worked out my best working methods. Now I should be able to write heaps more when I need to!

Not only have I ruined for myself that three key characters are kicked out of the show in Robin Hood - but i have recently read that a forth is also killed off.

HUMPH!!!

I never actually TRY to ruin these things for myself, but when I have to watch something that takes longer than a week, I eventually feel the need to look it up and accidently read the endings. And I DO mean accidently.

I feel in the writing mood...... I seriously never ever have time to write. like, ever.

I reeeeeeally wanna read Howl's moving castle again though. I watched the movie last night in preparation for seeing Ponyo (Hiao Misaki's latest film) tomorrow but i couldnt help thinking the whole time if only i were reading the book rather than watching the movie... what has come over me?!

Today in art I saw some old drawing i did this year and was so embarassed I tore them all out then and there and threw them out. I shall never be satisfied with my drawing.

Drained and Memories

I feel drained of interest. All my life I have had time to read, write, draw, play outside, visit friends, watch movies, play computer games and relax. This year, even though I get home earlier than normal, I have felt I never ever have time for anything. And then when it is the weekend with spare time, I shrivel up and want to be thrown back into the world of school or church where I can't ever think but follow routines and instincts. So I have hardly produced anything this year worth while.

So I want time, but when I get it I just can't use it.

I feel rather annoyed too, as I have ruined for myself that three of my favourite characters from the Robin Hood series die. One I have already seen at the end of season 2, but in season 3 I have accidently read the deaths of two more key characters. Humph!!

I have been writing up my memories from Primary School and High school. These are some funny moments from my writings:

Kindergarten:
Show and tell was a very important part of Kindergarten for a number of reasons:
* The person who would bring in the most interesting thing would be quite popular for the rest of the day.
* If you have been good all day then the teacher will chose you to sit on the table during it and look out for the person paying the most attention (In other words, your best friend). This was a great honour for you were publicly the teacher’s favourite.
* If you payed a lot of attention and you were picked you receive a lolly.
* There is a vote at the end and the person who receives the most votes for an interesting speech gets their object drawn into ‘the book of interesting show and tells’.

A large problem in Kindergarten was the toilets. There were only about 10 to share among 2 classes of 30 after every Lunch and Recess. And of course, everybody had their favourite cubical. I remember I only ever went in the second last on the right but one day I went in and there was the biggest spider I have ever seen on the door and I rushed out screaming. I never went in it again.

Year 5
There was a mass food trading going on in this year. Usually what was in your lunch box was not what you ended up eating. I would always bring a doughnut to school. I got sick of having all my friends talking about it. Sometimes I think back and I think that the reason so many people clumped around me was mainly because of the delicious nice food mum always packed for me. Doughnuts, Vegemite rolls, fruit sticks, popcorn, poppers, chocolate bars and lots more. I had a thing where almost every lunch I would give Jessica Lesson my popcorn packet and she’d give me a packet of salt and vinegar chips. People soon caught on and tried bringing S & V packets to school to trade but me and Jessica had a deal.

Year 6
Game Name: The Cell game
Description: Started when Kiera was being silly and pretended to be a teacher and made us all ‘stand in the corner’. She then put us in jail so we were all allocated a ‘cell’. Eventually, the game evolved into a game where one person was the ‘door’, one was the jailer and all the rest were residents of a hotel/jail. We had to give our passwords to the door to access our apartment (a slab of concrete between two lines). If we were naughty, the jailer would put us in the jail. Of course, the whole game was played in an out-of-bounds area.

Then, of course, there was the tambourine. Whenever we were talking too loud or the teacher needed our attention she would ring it. When she was angry at someone, she struck it onto the table in front of them, making everyone jump or even scream. Some people were in tears because it was so scary. Eventually, she broke it and got something like a single key of a xylophone and donged it instead

Another great memory is another game we made up that didn’t really have a name. It started when I looked through Zoe’s notepad and found she’d designed the front of it to resemble a mobile phone. I thought it was cool and copied her. Soon everyone was. Then I started making myself a paper laptop. Soon, it developed into a huge paper game behind the teacher’s back to be done when her lessons were getting tedious. I had a pet shop and made paper animals. I also made mobile phones. Kiera had a food shop; Amy changed her shop many times; Zoe was banker and Annika made Laptops/computer games. We used pretend ‘checks’ rather than money that had to have the banker’s signature to be valid. (this was because at first everyone made their own checks for things like $1 000 000

Year 7
We did a literacy reading circle this year. My first. We were separated into groups and every group read a separate book. I think we had me, Amy, Jess and one or two others... and we read the worst book in the world. The Incredible Journey. At the end we had to present our book to the class so we did a game-show where the conclusion was Amy being asked what she would re-name the book if she could, and she said: “The Incredibly Boring Journey”. We all shared this opinion.

Slow progression

I actually had the chance to sit down and write some more recently. I was so proud of myself! But just when I was getting back into the swing of writing, our computer decides it hates us again and won't let us access any internet or documents. So I can't write any more... or continue any of my 3 assignments due next week!!!! So I have to revert back to using Dad's laptop AGAIN.

I'm in the process of writing a short-ish story based on some ideas I got from the Japanese mini-series called Princess Tutu which I was watching recently. The idea of charcters being inside a story, and finding a way out of it into reality. Pretty random... anyway...

I'm STILL editing my Emeralds in the Tower story that's going on www.elizabethdanara.mysite.com though. It's a very long process. I need to start advertising that soon... I made a whole load of advertisements for it :D

I've been watching a musical on youtube recently called "A Very Potter Musical". It is extreamly funny in some parts, and just stupid and dumb in others, so if I keep watching for a while I'm bound to come across a good bit that makes it worth watching :)

Feeling Sick

I feel sick.

And I almost wish that was all there was to it.

So much has happened since I last posted here -- I don't know where to begin.

We had a family friend over recently who dramatically changed two things in my recent past. For one thing - she encouraged me in exactly the right point that I needed encouraging -- GET THAT BOOK PUBLISHED!!!

But what I thought was amazing was that she didn't consider publishing to be an act of sending my work to a printer who then somehow accepts it and it goes around the world - she meant something even more efficient, and I really have no idea why I was blinded for so long not to do it. Perhaps it was the hope that I may still have the chance of a lazy life where I could actually earn money by sitting down and writing - ha! as if!

So I have finally come to a conclusion that I am going on the web. I have already created my website - I have spent hours online, listening to tutorials and what not. The only reason that people aren't reading my stuff right now is that the stupid program that I'm using sent me an incorrect code to publish my stuff online, so I have to wait patiently for another one.

But the other way my recent life has been changed by our friend's visit is by the Robin Hood series. She left them for me to watch, and I have found that in my sick invalid state, I can do nothing but sit and stare at my beloved children: the characters of Robin Hood. I LOVE them all. I have discovered recently that movies with 4 main characters really draw me in. Weird... there must be some phycology behind this.

Quite Uninspired

I feel quite uninspired right now.

I drew some pictures recently of me from photos, and they actually turned out pretty good, and ive uploaded them, except our stupid printer can hardly pick up anything so you can hardly see it... ill try fiddlying on GIMP and see what i can do...

anyway, writing - which used to give me so much joy in the past, and would keep me going through the days with the prospect of writing more of my trilogy - gives me little pleasure now. My characters and unbelievable and i find it hard to get my ideas onto a page without making it all sound corny. so im having many problems right now.

Im feeling a little out of it actually -- i need something exciting to happen -- like when my fam came over yesterday!

I think my problem is that I just miss the joy of writing my Tales of Doria trilogy, and now that im done ppl read it and think its pretty boring, and that makes me feel depressed... :(

So I've been pretty annoyed at my excitement in publishing being ruined, and now I'm in a weird stage where I think that any other option is possible... I was chatting to one of my good friends recently, and in an offhand manner we agreed that it could be a possibility that we could write short stories together, and bind them outselves! we have done such things in the past, but we were now considering making websites for them, and selling them and stuff!

so, anything's possible right now i guess... we're still not sure how serious we could get about this idea of selling our own hand-made books (complete with pictures!!) and we are both a little nervous of how it might turn out if we really do it... well, we may as well try!!

Success and Failure

Well, the bad news first I guess.
I have given up on my dream of publishing while I'm still at school.
That has always been something I've wanted to achieve, but I see now for the first time that it is next to impossible.

I have looked up over ten different Australian publishers, and all either say that they are not publishing unpublished authors, or that they refuse to publish anyone under 18. I soon realised that they'd all say things like that, and I have decided to lay aside my writing dreams for now.

However, I have had great success with my drawing.
I drew a picture recently I entitled Flute Girl although she's playing a tin whistle, not a flute, but Tin Whistle Girl doesn't sound as good.

So here was the sketch I did last week:I was watching how other people computer draw on youtube, and I picked up a few techniques, including using basic layers (I didn't realise my program was sophisticated enough to use them). Anyway, I was fiddling with colours and backgrounds. Not exactly what I had wanted, but this is what I got:

I still am not quite happy with the bodice's colour schemes next to the skin and hair, and I would've prefered the glow in the background to be bigger, but it's good enough for me :D

Having Problems...

I have been having issues with publishers. There seems to be very few Australian publishers, and all have some reason to stop me from sending my work there.

Also, could anyone explain the difference between a normal publisher and a self-publishing company? Is a self-publishing one where you have to pay for it yourself? And do you really not have to pay at all for publishing normally??

I'm so confused!!

Glows and Publishers

I have spent a long time today drawing a picture of a girl, and then editing it on the computer using a handy program called GIMP. It depicts a girl holding some sort of glowing thing, and this is the picture before I added any confusing glows or shadows or anything:I saved it like this because I knew that I may mess it up when adding more things. I have never made a picture with so many new lighting techniques like this!

I know very well that there is something very odd about the shape of her head and features, but I shall worry about that some other time.

So after I had played around with the lighting effects on GIMP, this is what I got:

It's totally not what I want it to look like - for one thing, I want the background to be a lot darker, and the girl to be a bit lighter. I also want the glow to be coloured either green or red. But for today, this was enough work on that picture.

I am hoping to send a short novel - or a novella, whatever - soon to a publisher, and am looking up Australian publishers. Does anyone know any good ones besides scholastic - which quite personally I would rather not publish on? I have considered Pan McMillan too, but they seem to publish mainly for an older audience than I am looking for, and are filtering through their stuff more than others.

Anyone know any other Australian publishers??

My first entry on my new blog!

Well - I have set up this blog particularly for my writing and drawing. I have appalling spelling, and may turn this into a boring blog - but hey! At least I have somewhere to write frequently now.

I write novels in my spare time, and draw whenever I have free time from that. I have hardly written at all this year as I need to get some editing done first which I am trying to put off! Also school is getting busier and I find I have little time to do anything I want to any more, except go on Facebook which I do way too much!

It is my goal to have sent one of my books into a publisher by the end of this year, hopefully quite soon in fact, once I edit it again. I do not take my drawing as seriously as my writing however, although perhaps some day I shall consider teaching art, but right now it is for pure enjoyment :D
